CONSTRUCTION- EVERY BENCH IS BUILT BY HAND USING SUBSTANTIAL JOINERY TO PROVIDE THE ULTIMATE IN STRENGTH AND STABILITY.

Each bench is constructed using traditional joinery techniques. All of the frames feature drawbored twin mortice and tenon joints which are engineered to give tremendous resistance to racking.

Our bench tops are laminated from individual segments to give the ultimate in stability and we take the same approach with our vice jaws (depending on vice). To give maximum strength and reinforcement we dowel each of the laminated segments. Every top is solid; there is no thinner core hidden behind a deep front apron, so if the top is stated as 4” thick it will be 4” thick all the way through. This gives even the smallest bench incredible weight which lends increased stability.

Beech is used for all my Roubo and Dominy workbenches (unless you specifically require an alternative) and we only use 1st grade steamed beech. This is a very hard and heavy material which has been used in bench building for hundreds of years. Each Modern Workhorse bench is constructed from kiln dried ash. Before using the timber we ensure that it has been fully stress relieved and any sections that move even marginally through the build are discarded of. (Don’t worry we don’t waste good wood). We apply a special blend of oils to each of our benches to give a durable, hard wearing finish and to nourish the wood.
