Working with hand tools doesn’t have to be slow, by having a quick and effective means of holding the work I firmly believe that hand work can be as fluid as by machine.
Bench stops are the true meaning of efficient holding and once mastered, literally hours can be shaved off planing times. Simply pull the bench stop to the desired height and butt your work against it, no tail vice, no clamps, just a simple wooden stop. Once you’ve mastered the technique you’ll easily be able to edge plane boards without tipping the work. Team a bench stop up with a holdfast and its potential is multiplied tenfold.
Our bench stops are extremely substantial, generally 2 1/2” square and over a foot long (depending on bench) to offer maximum support.
